Professor of Education,
University of Exeter

Debra Myhill is Professor of Education at the University of Exeter, UK, and Director of the Centre for Research in Writing, which promotes inter-disciplinary research, drawing on psychological, socio-cultural and linguistic perspectives on writing. Underpinning this research is the principle that literacy, especially writing, is a pathway to empowerment. Over the past fifteen years, she has led a series of research projects in these areas, in both primary and secondary schools.  As Pro Vice Chancellor for Social Sciences (until 2019), she led the Transforming Transitions project, investigating the experiences of disadvantaged students in moving from BTEC courses in Higher Education.

  • Sharing research findings on experiences of access and participation in higher education from the Transforming Transitions Project
  • Exploring the paths to higher education for BTEC students who have traditionally had less success in progression to university
  • Assessing the key outcomes from student interviews with social experiences, assessment practices and ways of learning identified as the key challenges in transition
  • Harnessing this research to improve the experience of BTEC students on entry with more inclusive approaches to teaching, new academic mentoring systems and improved induction processes
